Camino continued -Navarrete to Leon

April 12, 2017 FB Post from Deborah

Holy week in Navarrete: April 12, 2017  Text from Barbara  "Tonight we are staying in Navarrete and stopped at this Cathedral before checking into our albergue.  Tonight there is a procession..."  "We are sitting in our room drinking wine and ready to go out to eat, go to bed and another day of walking starts.  Today - 13+ miles."

Text on April 13, 2017:  "Last night after dinner we watched an Easter procession which started and ended at this church.  Mary came out of the church first carried by all women.  Christ followed."

Received this picture from Mark.  They are in Ages, Spain.  Hopefully they did not have to overnight there as the reviews of the albergues suggest heavy bedbug infestation.  My guess is that they are overnighting in Burgos.

April 15, 2017:  Barbara sent this and said "We finally learned the English word for the oil extracted from this plant - canola."

Espinosa del Camino - April 15

This is where they will spend the night after a nice dinner of octopus soup.  Barbara says the population is 36.  Deborah posted this picture but I got a similar one texted from Barbara.  This is Pepe.  They are two days from Burgos.  They have most of Il Divos songs and were playing them.

Photos from the night of 4/14/2017:  Forgot to post these until Deborah posted hers this morning.  This is where they stayed the night of April 14.  Barbara texted the next day, "Last night we slept on mats on the floor in the back side of a cathedral and had a pilgrims dinner."

Facebook message from Heidi on 4/18/2017, posted from Burgos:  "Loving Spain! We've done about 300km on the Camino so far. Enjoying a day of rest in Burgos before heading out on the Meseta tomorrow, the less beautiful part of the trek. Good time for thinking and walking in a relaxed manner. That's my mantra as I take attention away from my aching shin. We're loving the great new people we meet and laugh a lot. Beauty all around! Here are some fun shots."

Posted on FB from Heidi 4/18/2017:  "I met a wonderful Dutch lady who walked with me a while. As we parted ways she asked to wait as she had something for me. It was a small book that had been passed on to her. It's a project from a German father and son to see about relationships and meetings you have along the Camino. I am to write in it about our encounter then pass it on. I felt honored to be a part of this process! Wonderful."

HEIDI's FB Post:  "Had an awesome birthday!!! Started with mimosas in Burgos before our 20 km to Hornillos with our new friend Niklas. Then our hosts at the albergue treated us to a fabulous dinner and special fire drink (quimada) Such a fun group of pilgrims, wonderful hosts and a birthday I won't soon forget. Thank you all for the wonderful greetings and well wishes today and all along the way!"

April 22, 2017 -

Happy Birthday to Kristine!

April 24, 2017 - Text from Barbara

Mark getting directions. Should reach Leon on the 26th. Will stay 2 nights at the AC Hotel

On this day I walked a few hours after lunch by myself. They found me lying on a bench when they arrived.

Heidi's post from Calzato del Coto, April 26

She says:  "Don't walk and text. While checking an email I stepped off the edge of the road and took a header into a ditch! Brilliant! This man, a guardian angel, appeared out of nowhere to help. He had all the bandages we needed.  Deborah Benson Steinbeck cleaned me up and off we went. This man seemed to just disappear. 2 days later we saw him again - Jim from Ireland. He shrugged it off, but I wanted him to know how much we appreciated him!

Arrived in Leon

Heidi also posted 4/26/17:  "Last night in Reliegos we went to the Bar Elvis. What a place! The owner was actually the crazy guy Ramone in the movie "The Way" He's pictured here by a drawing of him in a book about the Camino and with a bottle of his wine with him on the label. What a trip! Fun night. We drank a FEW bottles of his wine"

Comment from Kristine about this location:  "The moment we entered Elvis's Bar in Reliegos and saw/felt his energy I knew he was "Ramon" from The Way. Our Albergue host of VIVE TU CAMINO confirmed that he indeed was born and raised in Reliegos and has his family still in this dear village. When on the Camino staying at VIVE Tu Camino is a must. The couple found their new chapter calling after experiencing El Camino and extend every kindness to each new Peregrino. So blessed to know them."

A comment about these posts. Added April 16, 2017 Amended April 25, 2017

It has been difficult to follow an actual timeline on these posts.  I have been alternating from facebook posts and texts that I get from Barbara and Lisel. Unless something is said about the day, I have had to guess the order of things.  The map helps as I can add the site to the map and it gives a location to follow. If you go to the map you can drag the map to see the route and if you click on a marker, you can see the location.  You can also street walk.  A note about the map:  I asked it to find the location and it posted the marker even in smaller places that are not normally found on a map.  Google does have a map of the Camino (The French Way) but it might not be exact to their route.

In Deborah's posts, she must have her roaming on as her posts are picking up locations from where she is posting.  The post this mornng (April 16) of the sleeping bags on the floor of the cathedral room (where they spent the night of April 14) showed up as coming from Burgos, which may or may not mean they have reached Burgos but may just be roaming from there.  Additionally, they are nine hours ahead of us.

Amendment:  This website is reactive in that it should post information visually well on most devices.  However, yesterday, I took a look at it on my I-phone and noticed that it did not feed the same as it did on my computer and I-Pad.  I rearranged the posts on this page to read down in order of date.  This way it will post in order in a small screen phone format.
